Decentralization concerning islands requires "powerful incentives and to highlight the comparative advantages of the islands," SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Stefanos Kasselakis said on Nisyros on Wednesday.

During a tour of Greek islands, the main opposition leader said it is necessary to have "powerful incentives and to highlight the comparative advantages of the islands, in order to set a critical goal of decentralization in realistic terms," according to a party statement.

The statement said that "island residents welcomed him by describing in detail the serious issues they face, especially in terms of transportation and especially connections with nearby islands. The tragic state and extreme understaffing of the hospital on neighboring Kos forces Nisyros residents to travel to Athens at an unbearable cost (transport, housing, food) of over 1,000 euros, as residents explained to Stefanos Kasselakis."

SYRIZA's leader warmly thanked the volunteer health workers who have been staffing for decades the large gaps in the National Health System, the party said.

Kasselakis' next stop is on the island of Kos.
