National Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos expressed condolences at the death of Thomas Menino, 71, Boston's longest-serving mayor who died on Thursday,30/10/2014 from cancer.

National Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos expressed condolences at the death of Thomas Menino, 71, Boston's longest-serving mayor who died from cancer.

Menino had stepped down in 2014 after two decades in office. He had served five terms from 1993 to the present year.

In his message, Avramopoulos said, "I want to say farewell to a beloved person, with whom I shared a sincere and deep friendship for over two decades. Tonight, with his family, let us all pray for Thomas, in the hope that our grief becomes a constant memory."

Menino had said in an interview in Boston that Avramopoulos was an international personality whom he admired. Both men had been honoured by the Greek American community during their mayorship of Boston and Athens as Grand Marshalls of the annual Greek parade held for Independence Day (March 25) in the Massachusetts city.
