Justice minister Athanassiou visits Crete

Justice Minister Charalambos Athanassiou, after visiting prison facilities on the island of Crete, on Thursday (20/11) expressed his content with conditions of incarceration in Greek prisons.

He acknowledged that prisons are overcrowded and noted that the number of prisoners is 35 percent higher than the facilities were designed for, attributing this to large numbers of foreign nationals and irregular migrants held in prisons.

He also referred to the efforts to decongest prisons and the need to support them with personnel, noting he was on an open line with the administrative reform and the finance ministries for the hiring of 500 correctional officers and staff.

Athanassiou earlier visited the Chania Court House and expressed his content over the courts' operation despite staffing issues and particularly focused on the problems faced by the city’s court authorities in their current building due to a lack of space. The minister is also expected to visit the city of Heraklion.
