Customs official found guilty of fraud

A criminal court in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on Friday sentenced a customs officer to nine years in jail for faking exports from Greece through the Evzoni, at the borders with Skopia.

According to authorities, the man was accused of having processed a total of 93 containers with Chinese products in transit from Thessaloniki and of providing documents showing they were exported to Skopia from July to September 2007. In reality however they never made it to the neighbouring country, and were distributed in Greece or other EU countries, costing the country with lost revenues.

The court set the customs official free ahead of a repeat trial in the appeals court. He has denied the charges.

Also found guilty was a Bulgarian national, who was given a five-year sentence in absentia. A second trial on criminal charges will take place once he is apprehended.

In the same case, the then-customs director and two more customs officials were acquitted, while another Bulgarian national, who was represented in court by his lawyer was also found innocent.
