President of the Republic first round vote expected on 19.00

The process for the election of President of the Republic at the Parliament's plenum will open with a roll call vote on Wednesday (17/12/2014) at 19.00.

There will be no debate prior to the voting. Deputies will be called by name to stand up and openly express their preference. Under the Parliament's Standing Orders, deputies can either vote for candidate President Stavros Dimas or "Present."

The presidential candidate will have to collect at least 200 votes during the first roll-call vote. If this number is not reached, a second round of voting will be held on December 23, requiring a 200-MP majority to pass through Parliament. If the second round is also not successful in electing a President, lawmakers will have a third and final chance on December 29. In the last round of voting, the candidate must secure 180 votes, otherwise the cabinet must resign within 10 days and early national elections be declared.
