Civil aviation workers union says lease deal for regional airports will be disastrous

Privatising Greek regional airports will have disastrous consequences for the economic and social fabric of provinces, the union of civil aviation workers OSYPA said during an online press conference on Wednesday (4/3).

The head of OSYPA Vassilis Alevizopoulos said if the privatization goes through, it will create a “monopoly with expensive fees and taxes, but will also to weaken them.
He went on to say the move will harm regional communities, travelers, Greek tourism and the country.

The airport fees will jump to 26.5 euros from 12 euros today per departing passenger during the first year of operation after the German investor takes over and then to 32 euros in the fourth year, Alevizopoulos said.

“Germans want to turn the country into their own fiefdom. It’s a big game played at the expense of the industry and tourism,” he added.
Alevizopoulos said more fees will be added to the total bill which will be paid by the passengers.

OSYPA proposed keeping control of regional airports to promote the real needs, such as growth, tourism, revenues for the state and society and ensuring national security.
