Ruling SYRIZA MP visits convicted terrorists on hunger strike; ND MP responds

Ruling SYRIZA party MP Vasso Leva on Friday visited convicted terrorists Dimitris Koufodinas and Kostas Gournas in Lamia Public Hospital, central Greece, where they have been transferred under heavy guard from Domokos Prison for precautionary reasons as both continue a hunger strike demanding better detention conditions.

Speaking on Star FM private radio, she said that she assured them that Type C maximum security prisons will be abolished and detention conditions will become more humane, noting that the relevant government-sponsored draft bill will be tabled in Parliament as early as next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Responding to a question on the content of her talk with Koufodinas she said that "she briefed him on the prospects," adding that he told her that "he agrees but will continue the hunger strike until the draft bill is tabled."

Leva underlined that "everybody has the right to choose the way in which they want to claim more quality in their lives regardless of where they are...".

In response, main opposition New Democracy (ND) MP Dora Bakoyannis on Friday asked Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos to inform the parliament if the government has contacts with convicted terrorists ahead of the tabling of a draft bill on the abolition of maximum security prisons in the country.

Bakoyannis referred to Leva's visit "to Domokos Prison and Lamia Hospital to meet with Dimitris Koufodinas and other convicted terrorists in order to offer them psychological support and brief them on the government's initiatives as regards the draft bill that provides for the abolition of Type C prisons."

Bakoyannis asked whether the Greek government negotiates with terrorists before making its decisions and drawing up its policy on justice-related issues.
