Government unveils draft law aiming to tackle sports-related violence

Deputy Culture Minister for Sports Stavros Kontonis on Friday unveiled a new draft law that includes measures against violence in sports stadiums, which he said will soon be tabled in Parliament after consultation with Parliament President Zoi Konstantopoulou.

"I hope that all sides appreciate the government's determination to stamp out all the unhealthy phenomena in Greek sport. We seek the cooperation of all institutional bodies and are certain we will achieve our common goal," he said.

The bill introduces tougher penalties designed to prevent phenomena of violence in sport and avert racist behaviour in and outside sports venues. These will include high fines for clubs and sports organisations, federations and associations, in addition to individuals.

It also gives the sports minister the power to ban ticket sales, matches, tournaments and other sports events, including the participation of teams in international tournaments.

The fines, ranging from 5,000 to 500,000 euros, will be imposed in cases where others are incited, urged, encouraged or applauded for violence, racist behaviour and other incidents, including via the press or electronic media and the internet. The sums collected will be paid into a special account for promoting amateur sport and sports education.
