Greece will continue its efforts to return the Parthenon Marbles, says minister

Greece will continue its efforts to raise the issue of the return of the Parthenon Marbles from Britain, Alternate Minister for Culture Nikos Xydakis said on Friday (27/03).

"The Greek government will continue its efforts with all available means and will raise the issue anew with UNESCO's General Director, while waiting Britain's reactions and handlings of the issue," Xydakis said in a statement and urged Britain to reconsider its stance.

"Greece remains open to any positive gestures," he noted.

The minister was responding to Britain's refusal to accept UNESCO's mediation on the Parthenon Marbles, according to letters addressed to the international organisation by the British Museum and the British government posted on the British Museum website.

"There is a lack of willingness for cooperation and dialogue on the British side, which also seems to ignore the related recommendations of the Intergovernmental Committee ICPRCP, an institution of UNESCO," he said.

"We are struck by the negativism and lack of due respect towards the good services of mediators. We are also struck by the completely unilateral and continued effort to present an issue that concerns two countries as an issue between two museums," the statement adds.
