Greek unemployment remains highest in the EU‏

Greek unemployment rate rose slightly to 26 pct of the workforce in December, from 25.9 pct in November, to remain the highest in the European Union, followed by Spain (23.2 pct in February), Eurostat said on Tuesday (31/03).

The EU executive's statistics agency, in a report released here, said that the number of unemployed people in Greece totaled 1.23 million in December, with the unemployment rate among men at 23.4 pct, among women at 29.3 pct and among young people aged below 25 years old at 51.2 pct.

The unemployment rate eased to 11.3 pct in the Eurozone in February, from 11.4 pct in January, the lowest rate since May 2012.

In the EU, the unemployment rate fell to 9.8 pct from 9.9 pct. In total, there were 23.8 million unemployed people in the EU and 18.2 million in the Eurozone.

Germany (4.8 pct) and Austria (5.3 pct) recorded the lowest unemployment rates.
