Statement by German President on war reparations historic, Parliament president say

Parliament President Zoi Konstantopoulou welcomed a statement made by German President Joachim Gauck concerning war reparations to Greece has historic, stressing that this was the first time the issue has been raised in so official a way.

In her statement on Saturday, Konstantopoulou was commenting on an interview with Gauck published by the German newspaper "Suddeutsche Zeitung" on Friday, where he said that Germany should examine Greece's demands.
"It's the right thing to do for a history-conscious country like ours to consider what possibilities there might be for reparations," he said.
Konstantopoulou is currently also chair of a cross-party committee on claiming German war debts to Greece, including reparations, compensation and repayment of a forced occupation loan extracted by the Nazi regime. She suggested that the shift in the stance of the German side was directly linked to the fact that Greece was promoting the issue in a coordinated and official way, both through the Parliament committee and through Greek MEPs led by veteran politician Manolis Glezos, as well as the president and prime minister.
