Chancellor Merkel 'doing everything she can' to keep Greece in eurozone, German spokesman says

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is doing everything in her power to keep Greece in the eurozone, the chancellor's spokesman Steffen Seibert stressed on Wednesday.

He noted that this has been the chancellor's stance since the start of the crisis.

Seibert also specified that the chancellor's conversations with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the phone in no way "replaced" the talks between Greece and the institutions, adding that the road map decided at the Eurogroup on February 20 still applies.

Proposals for reforms were now expected from Athens, which must be approved in order for funding to be disbursed, he said.

On behalf of the German finance ministry, spokeswoman Friederike von Tiesenhausen said the ongoing negotiations with Greece were "constructive".
