Electricity demand rises to 2015 highs because of heatwave

Domestic demand for electricity rose to the highest level this year as a heatwave hitting the country has raised the use of air conditioning systems.

Despite an economic crisis, that has reduced consumption by enterprises, demand approached 10,000 MW in recent days and this demand was basically covered by domestic energy sources as electricity imports have been reduced.

Electricity demand on Monday was 9,153 MW, on Tuesday it rose to 9,432 MW and on Wednesday it rose to 9,674 MW, while on Thursday it rose to 9,732 MW. Electricity imports during this period covered around 8-12 pct of demand, significantly down compared with a more than 25 pct in previous months.
