Large blaze near Patras under control, two fire fighters injured

A large wildfire that broke out in an agricultural and forest land on Monday (31/8) afternoon near the city of Patras in the Peloponnese and injured two fire fighters is now under control, authorities said.

Earlier, two fire fighters battling the blaze were injured after their vehicle was trapped in the flames. The two men were transferred to the military hospital of Patras. One of them is said to be suffering from first degree head burns and was soon released while the other who was injured in the eyes is still being examined by an ophthalmologist.

The strong winds blowing in the area spread the flames quickly in the areas of Ano Syhena and Voudeni reaching just two kilometers away from Patras and creating a suffocating atmosphere in the city.

The authorities had dispatched 23 fire fighting vehicles, 40 fire fighters and 23-man hiker unit. The Canadair aircraft stopped throwing water after the flames abated.
