Frontex should become border 'Europol', President Pavlopoulos says

President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos called for the activation of FRONTEX and its conversion into a type of 'Europol' to guard European borders, including those of Greece, during his meeting on Tuesday with Alternate Foreign Minister Spiros Flogaitis.

«With migration flows [of this magnitude] the responsibility for guarding the borders also rests with Europe and FRONTEX needs to be activated further for the guarding of European borders», Pavlopoulos said, pointing out that the borders of Greece and other member-states were also those of the European Union.

He welcomed the position adopted by the head of the European People's Party (EPP) Manfred Weber in statements to 'Suddeutsche Zeitung', saying that «the borders of the member-states are the borders of Europe» and that FRONTEX must take charge of this responsibility.

Pavlopoulos said also that Flogaitis, from his position as alternate foreign minister, was the most suitable person to highlight this fact at the upcoming EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.

Flogaitis had informed the president that, after consultation with Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis, he will be representing Greece at the upcoming emergency EU foreign ministers' meeting on migration.
