EU Commission did not demand VAT for private education in Greece

The European Commission did not ask Greek authorities to make changes in legislation setting VAT for private education, European Commission spokesperson Annika Breidthardt said on Tuesday, replying to questions.

She said that the Commission was aware of the Greek government's decision to impose 23 pct VAT on private education services but noted that this was not something demanded by the Commission or included in the memorandum signed with Greece.

She said the measure was part of the raft of measures passed by the Greek Parliament on August 14.

According to EU sources, the imposition of VAT on private education does not seem to contravene EU laws.
