Mytilene wildfire brought under control, says mayor
A large wildfire that burned olive trees and some forestland in the region between Geras and Plomari in Mytiline was brought under full control on Friday, the island mayor Spyros Galinos said.
The fire started on Thursday and spread quickly due to the strong winds.
“I would like to congratulate particularly the fire department officials and volunteers, the army and the municipal and regional staff who, with overexertion, managed to bring this fire under control. I would also like to thank the Civil Protection Service for the immediate response and finally the pilots of all aerial means who showed, once again, heroism and self-sacrifice,” Galinos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
