Authorities evacuated 550 children from a summer camp in the area of Sofiko as a large wildfire raged in an area of forest in the Ryto location in Corinth on Monday afternoon.

The deputy regional governor of Corinthia, Pelopidas Kalliris, said the children were transported safely to a high school building in the area.

The fire also threatened houses in the settlement of Ano Almyri but firefighters were able to stop the flames from reaching the village. Efforts are underway to put it out before nightfall, when there will be no support from fire-fighting aircraft. Corinth mayor Alexandros Pnevmatikos, said the blaze spread quickly over many kilometers but the immediate intervention of the fire brigade and their water-dropping aircraft in particular helped limit the original front. He also said it has started to rain.

A force of 70 fire men, 33 vehicles, a 60-person team on foot, six aircraft and five helicopters is currently fighting the flames.
