Thousands of visitors participated in International Lighthouse Weekend this August

Eleven thousand people visited the 23 lighthouses which remained opened from 10:00-20:00 last Sunday (Aug. 20) throughout Greece, as part of the 2017 International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend.

During the day, visitors were informed about the importance of lighthouses and other nautical aids in navigation, as well as the work of lighthouse-keepers.

Lighthouses in Greece fall under the jurisdiction of the Hellenic Navy. The annual event is held on the third full weekend of August each year and encourages lighthouse managers and keepers all around the world to open their doors to the public for a viewing of their lighthouse and its history.

This year, the Navy opened the following lighthouses:

1. Aghios Nikolaos, Kea
2. Akrotiri, Santorini
3. Arkitsa, Fthiotida
4. Moudari, Kythera
5. Vrysaki, Lavrio
6. Gerogombos, Kefalonia
7. Gourouni, Skopelos
8. Drepano, Patra-Achaia
9. Drepano, Chania
10. Cassandra, Halkidiki
11. Katakolo, Ilia
12. Keri, Zakynthos
13. Kranai, Gythio
14. Megalo Emvolo, Thessaloniki
15. Melangavi, Loutraki
16. Plaka, Limnos
17. Korakas, Paros
18. Kokkinopoulo, Psara
19. Alexandroupoli, Alexandroupoli
20. Tenero, Lakonia
21. Koprena, Arta
22. Kaki kefali, Halkida
23. Monemvasia, Lakonia.
