Protesting miners block Messogion Avenue outside environment ministry

Miners protesting outside the environment and energy ministry to demand the issue of pending licences for the Kassandra mines in Halkidiki blocked Messogion Avenue in both directions on Thursday morning, causing traffic chaos on a key thoroughfare linking central Athens to the city's eastern suburbs.

The miners demanded a swift resolution of outstanding problems blocking the issue of licences for the Halkidiki mines, saying that their jobs are at stake.

«The three licences issued for the Olympias mine are not enough for the project to go ahead; it is a single project», the head of their union Christos Zafeiroudas told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

The mine workers began gathering outside the ministry at 7:00 and a meeting between a miners' delegation and ministry officials is expected soon. At 11:00 they intend to march to parliament. Both the north- and south-bound lanes of Messogion are closed at this time, near the junction with Katehaki Road.
