Captain of 'Lassea' gets a two-year suspended sentence

The captain of tanker "Lassea", which was used to pump oil out of the sunken "Agia Zoni II" ship in Saronikos only to be later found carrying a cargo of mixed oils without documentation, was handed a two-year suspended sentence in Piraeus on Thursday.

The first mechanic, also charged with smuggling fuel, was found innocent.

According to the court, one of the vessel's holds was found to contain 98% water and 2% mixed oils, while the other one contained 1% fuel (mazut) and 10% mixed oils; unpaid customs duties were calculated at around 15,500 euros.

"Lassea" is still docked off the Perama shore in Piraeus, awaiting orders of where to discharge its cargo. The tanker "Agia Zoni II" sank off the Saronic Gulf on September 10 and created one of the worst oil spills in the area.
