PM, ND leader congratulate police on successfully freeing kidnapped business man

A successful police operation to find and free abducted business man Michalis Lebidakis on the island of Crete earned messages of congratulation from both Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday.

In a post on his Twitter account, the prime minister noted that the government's vision was to have a police force that "is effective against organised crime and friendly, not authoritarian, toward citizens."

Mitsotakis also conveyed his congratulations to the police force in a tweet: "Congratulations to ELAS for freeing M. Lebidakis! It has the operational capabilities to carry out difficult missions," he wrote.

Lebidakis was released from a captivity that had lasted six months, following his abduction in the Iraklion area. He was found after a police operation targeting an old used car scrap yard about four kilometres outside of the city of Rethymno.

According to sources, Lebidakis was found tied up and visibly worn down by his long ordeal. He has now been taken to Rethymno.
