Current energy decisions will determine the next 20 years, Energy Min Stathakis says

The global energy market is entering a new phase with focus on gas and renewable energy markets and the decisions to be taken to ensure international stability, Environment and Energy Minister Giorgos Stathakis said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency on the sidelines of the "Russian Energy Week 2017" forum held in Moscow.

"This forum has highlighted the global energy strategy as it will be formed in the coming years and, of course, the role of Russia as a major energy power amidst the enormous changes in the energy mix," the Greek minister said and added: "The whole agenda shows that the current decisions will determine the future for the next 20 years."

Stathakis talked about his meeting with his Russian counterpart, Alexander Novak, with whom he discussed a wide range of bilateral energy issues, as well as the need to enhance the prospect of steady cooperation between the EU and Russia.

Russian gas is and will continue to be one of the main and most economical choices for Europe, which has a positive impact on industry and final consumers. The European Union covers about 30 pct of its needs from Russian gas and is not expected to exceed it. Therefore, any statement about total dependence is exaggeration.

Stathakis noted that there will obviously be other sources of supply, which may also increase in the future.

On the former Helliniko airport site, he said that the investment will advance. "The decision of the Central Archaeological Council concerns sites of archaeological interest. This means that the excavations of the archaeological finds can be carried out as well as and the construction work. These sites are not included in the Helleniko's plan. Therefore, I think it was the best solution," he stated.
