Greek parties strongly condemn attack on young Afghan student's house

The Greek government and political parties condemned on Friday the attack on the house of an 11-year-old student of Afghan descent who had been selected by lot to be his school's flag-bearer in the October 28 national holiday parade in Dafni, a southern suburb of Athens.

Ruling party SYRIZA called the attack “clearly racist” and said that “practices that attempt to sow the poison of racism and bigotry in the sensitive sector of education must be isolated, the soonest possible.”

In its press release, main opposition New Democracy (ND) referred to the attack and said, “this is the daily lawlessness that ND has highlighted today and is unfortunately often motivated by racism – this is something on which (Prime Minister Alexis) Tsipras has said nothing in (his recent address in) Parliament, as he lives in his own space and time.”

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) condemned the attack and “reactive fascist gangs that target defenseless people, like this attack against a female refugee and her three little children.” It also criticized the government for “promoting itself as humanitarian while leaving defenseless before this racist brutality refugees and migrants - including Amir’s family, twice rejecting their application for reunification with their father in Germany.” The party’s criticism was also directed at ND for “aligning fully with the EU’s policy on refugees and migrants.”

Independent Greeks (ANEL), the junior member of the ruling coalition, said in its message through spokeswoman Mantalena Papadopoulou that the attack “is a fascist act springing from hate” and expressed the party’s “strong abhorrence.” Such acts “can under no circumstances be tolerated by the Greek people,” she stressed.

Stavros Theodorakis, leader of Potami party, tweeted his response: “Every day a new target. Yesterday, the activist at ASOEE (Athens University of Economics and Business) and the three cadets, today the young Afghan. Gangs intimidate with impunity.”

“Fascist-like practices with racist motives have no place in our country,” Democratic Left (DIMAR) leader Thanassis Theocharopoulos said, calling for “alertness and immediate reaction” and for the investigation of the incident by the police. “We will not allow bigotry, xenophobia, and racism to prevail in our country,” he said.
