Symi in state of emergency after heavy storm inflicts major damage

A state of emergency has been declared on the island of Symi (Dodecanese) on Tuesday following Monday evening's heavy rainfall on the island.

Talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), Civil Protection Secretary General Yiannis Kapakis said that the unprecedented bad weather on the island left major damage in its wake.

Houses and shops were flooded, a PPC power station has been inundated, leaving the island without power, and there has been major damage to the island's infrastructure.

The island remains without electricity and efforts are underway to bring a power generator from Rhodes.

Kapakis said priority will be given to removing mud, rocks and other debris carried by the flood water, as well as pumping water from flooded basements and restoring the island's infrastructure, especially the flooded power station.

Deputy Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios arrived on the island on Monday night to help coordinate the restoration efforts.
