ND to vote in favour of the 'social dividend' bill for welfare handouts
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis was in Strasbourg when he watched the prime minister's televised address announcing the distribution of a 'social dividend' of 1.4 billion euros in one-off handouts, ND sources said on Tuesday.
After holding a meeting with his close associates, Mitsotakis decided that ND will vote in favour of the draft "social dividend" law in principle because, as ND officials said, the party backs every kind of support measure for citizens stricken by the crisis.
Mitsotakis is in Strasbourg to address the assembly of the European Peoples Party parliamentary group on Tuesday evening.
In an announcement issued by the party's press office it was underlined that "The prime minister of taxes has announced that he will return a small part of the billions he has taken from Greeks. Tsipras takes a lot from one pocket and returns a little to the other and once agan lies to the Greeks'.
ND said that the poverty caused by Tsipras in the country can't be fixed through vote-catching handouts. The Greeks want jobs and these will come about by reducing taxation, new investments and growth.
