Gov't spokesman confirms PM's request for new date of armaments question discussion

The charges that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is in France to avoid a scheduled discussion in Parliament on a question about an arms sales to Saudi Arabia are "unworthy of comment", government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Wednesday.

"For this reason, the prime minister has sent a letter to the president of Parliament requesting the postponement of the discussion on a question relating to the ministry of Defence sale until Monday, November 27, in order to attend and express his views," the spokesman said.
Tsipras is in Paris to receive an award from the French magazine Politique Internationale (the "Prix du Courage politique") and another from the city’s Bar Association ("Prix de l'Engagement européen").

"As the prime minister will receive an award from the magazine Politique Internationale for his political courage, it remains to be seen if (main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos) Mitsotakis has any," Tzanakopoulos said.

In his letter to Parliament President Nikos Voutsis, Tsipras said he is requesting the postponement of the discussion "because I will not tolerate inappropriate and trivial attacks."

Criticising "a comical attempt at misinformation" by the main opposition party and some of the press, the prime minister called on ND leader Mitsotakis to "show the political courage to attend the debate in order to support the insupportable."

"Despite the fact that no Greek prime minister has ever attended or even taken a stance in a process of a parliamentary question, the attempt at slander, misinformation and propaganda cannot and will not remain unanswered by me," Tsipras noted.

As part of his visit, Tsipras will also meet with French businesspeople who are interested in investing in Greece. The visit was initially planned for October 18 but Tsipras’ visit to the United States changed the date to November 23.
