Process of applying for flood-damage compensation to be digitised, Pappas announces

The procedure by which flood victims in Mandra and other flood-stricken areas of West Attica can apply for compensation are to be speeded up, Digital Policy Minister Nikos Pappas announced on Sunday, at the 8th Regional Conference for the Reconstruction of Production held in West Attica.

Pappas said that a team of experts will visit the region on Wednesday to record the problems in the applications system and to digitise the process, in order to speed up the procedure. "As ministry of digital policy, telecommunciations and media we are creating the infrastructure to return the municipalities of Mandra and Elefsina to normality," he said.

The minister said the project will be carried out in cooperation with the local municipal authorities, noting that new technologies can be used to conserve resources but also improve efficiency and the daily lives of citizens.

Pappas said that the "smart cities" of the future could be closer than ever, with applications that were already installed in some areas that were not costly. He emphasised the need for high-speed connectivity, however, and announced that schools and public buildings will be equipped with fast internet connections and wifi, as well as a coupon system to help private citizens and businesses get high-speed connections.
