PM: We want western Attica to become Athens' front yard

"We want West Attica to become the 'front yard' of Athens," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a speech at the indoor stadium in Elefsina on Sunday evening, expressing his great joy to be among the citizens of West Attica as he wrapped up the 8th regional conference on reorganising production for the region.

"It is our duty to be here with the citizens of Mandra and Elefsina, so they do not feeel like 'backyard' residents of Greece's capital," Tsipras said, saying that West Attica had been deliberately abandoned to its fate. "It was and is the region of the poor," he said.

Tsipras said that "the problems, the injustices and the toxicity of the growth model that went bankrupt five years ago is concentrated in western Attica.

We must not allow Greece to return to the degeneracy that led us to the crisis, the prime minister added. Referring to the recent tragic floods in the area, he announced that the environment ministry has already requested from the relevant body to conduct an investigation and to submit a report to the government.

Presenting the government's plan for western Attica, he focused on four major issues: sustainable growth, quality of life, social cohesion and necessary intervention for the "next day".
