Shot fired at appeals court guard came from Kalashnikov, police say

The shot fired by terrorists at an Athens Appeals Court guard on Friday came from a Kalashnikov rifle, police announced after examining the bullet casing found on Loukareos Street.

The terrorists fired one shot at the guard to stop him giving pursuit when he spotted them leaving a bomb outside the court building.

The shot was fired by the terrorist waiting for his two comrades in a mini-van that the three then used to get away.

Police are carrying out more tests on the bullet casing to determine whether the same gun has been used in attacks by the left-wing terrorist organisation Popular Fighters Group, which they suspect to be behind the bomb attack, or whether it has been used in other criminal actions.

The getaway car, which was later found burnt-out in Athens' Exarcheia district, had been reported stolen from a south Athens suburb.
