Christmas sales up 2.5 pct on average

Retail sales during the Christmas period grew by an average 2.5 pct Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE) said on Friday.

ESEE, however, noted that there were viariations between shop categories, products and food or non-food products.

In a first estimate over retail sales in the Christmas period, ESEE said that large enterprises recorded sales growth of 5-6 pct, while several clothing companies recorded sales decline of up to 12 pct. Clothing/footwear, food/beverage, books and toys topped the list of sales, followed by cosmetics and electronic devices. ESEE said it was difficult to make any estimates over sales in the food sector and noted that "unfortunately, 15 pct of Greeks were not able to buy any Christmas gifts".
