The government files petition to annul decision for granting asylum to Turkish officer

The Greek government has filed a petition for the annulment of the secondary asylum committee's decision granting asylum to one of the eight Turkish officers, the Prime Minister's press office announced.

"Following the standing position in relation to the 8 Turkish soldiers, as has been repeatedly and publicly expressed, the Greek government submitted a petition for the annulment of the secondary asylum committee's decision," the press release said.

The decision caused the reaction of the main opposition New Democracy (ND), which stressed in an announcement, that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras "has to answer why the government filed a petition for the annulment of the secondary asylum committee's decision granting political asylum to one of the eight Turkish officers. The prime minister, according to the announcement, recently underlined that "as a rule of law, Greece respects the distinction of powers" and will do its best to "ensure that the eight Turkish officers will have a fair trial."

"New Democracy probably is not aware that the secondary asylum committees are administrative bodies and speaks of interference in justice. At the very moment when the petition for annulment is actually referring the issue to Justice. But New Democracy cannot do well with the distinction of powers when (ND leader Kyriakos) Mitsotakis confuses Montesquieu with Rousseau ... ", Tzanakopoulos said.
