Decision on government appeal against Turkish officer's asylum expected next week

An Administrative Court of Appeal in Athens discussing on Friday the government's request to temporary cancel the asylum granted to one Turkish serviceman by an independent asylum committee late last year, will announce its decision next week.

The man was among the eight Turkish nationals who fled Turkey after the failed coup attempt of July 2016. The decision of the court's president Evgenia Mylonopoulou will make decision.

During the hearing, the lawyers for the State claimed the request to freeze the asylum must be granted to "avoid disrupting Greek-Turkish relations."

On its side, the Turkish officer’s defence said the decision to grant asylum to the man is well-supported and there is no room for overturning it before any court. It also said that the Greek State has an obligation to protect people who flee to the country because they are in danger of being tortured of killed.
