Shipping minister visits the Aegean islands of Symi and Stroggyli

"This is not where Greece ends but where it begins," Shipping and Island Policy Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis said on Monday, visiting the military outpost on the island of Stroggyli.

"It is an honour for you to be here and I feel truly moved that I have visited you," Kouroumblis said to the soldiers, while attending a mass in the chapel of Agios Nikolaos on the island.

The minister also visited the island of Symi and met with its mayor Eleftherios Papakalodoukas, as well as the island's coast guard authority to be briefed about its operational issues.

The commander of the Hellenic Coast Guard Vice Admiral Stamatis Raptis, who accompanied the minister on his visit, announced additional men will soon be sent to reinforce the Symi coast guard.

In talks with the mayor, Kouroumblis emphasised the importance of cooperation, noting that this mobilised forces and services that made the various interventions of executive authority more effective.
