Court refuses house arrest instead of jail for Greek soldiers held in Turkey

A Turkish court on Tuesday refused to allow the two Greek servicemen being held in Turkey to await trial under house arrest instead of jail. The two Greek soldiers, who have yet to be charged, are currently being held in a maximum security prison in Edirne.

According to Anadolu news agency sources, lawyers representing the two Greeks on Tuesday filed a request that their imprisonment be replaced by house arrest. The court refused, however, on the grounds that the two do not have a permanent address in Turkey.

The two soldiers, who were carrying out a routine border patrol, have been held by Turkish authorities since early March, when they were caught on the Turkish side of the border by a Turkish military patrol. According to their lawyers, they crossed the border by accident due to bad weather conditions.
