Water issues force Thessaloniki to temporarily rotate water supply
Temporary measures to restore the water supply in Thessaloniki areas affected by a breakdown of the main Aravissos pipe were taken following a meeting on Saturday that included the director of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' office in the city.
The city has been facing severe supply problems in the last few days, and will rotate water supply from unaffected areas to those without drinkable water, authorities said.
Water company (EYATh) president Yiannis Krestenitis said the problems in water supply will take time, as the water coming through the pipe is still opaque and will not be distributed until its potability improves. This affects a third of the major northern city's water supply, he said.
As opacity is not improving, Krestenitis said, supply will be interrupted in areas that had no problems these past few days in order to provide water to other areas. The interruptions were scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, he said and would last for 24 hours. EYDATh sent a statement out with the areas that would rotate.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Interior Minister Maria Kollia-Tsarouha, mayors of the Thessaloniki area and regional directors.
