Fatal road accidents in Greece declined 41 pct since 2010 but remain high, Commission reports

Fatal road accidents in Greece plunged 41 pct between 2010 and 2017 but the fatal accident rate remained significantly higher than the European Union average, according to road safety figures released by the European Commission on Tuesday.

While the 2010-2017 decline in fatal accidents was double that seen in the EU (20 pct), the number of road accident deaths per million inhabitants stood at 69 in Greece in 2017, compared to a rate of 49 per million inhabitants for the EU as a whole. Greece also saw a 10 pct decline in fatal accidents in 2017 compared with the previous year.

According to a European Commission announcement, the preliminary 2017 road safety statistics show, for the second year in a row, a decrease in the number of fatalities of around 2 pct, or 300 fewer deaths than in 2016.

"While this trend is encouraging, reaching the EU objective of halving road fatalities between 2010 and 2020 will now be very challenging. In addition, it is estimated that another 135 000 people were seriously injured last year, including a large proportion of vulnerable users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Beside the victims, road fatalities and injuries also affect the society as a whole, with an estimated socio-economic cost of 120 billion euros a year," the announcement said.
