World Museum Day celebrated on May 18 with tours, exhibitions, workshops

Guided tours, exhibitions, art workshops, educational programs, speeches, virtual tours, concerts, theatrical performances, poetry readings, seminars and interactive digital presentations are some of the events taking place in museums around the country on Friday to celebrate World Museum Day.

"Museums must become the means of cultural exchange, in order to enhance education, promote mutual understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples," according to the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

World Museum Day is celebrated each year with various events and is devoted to a specific theme related to museums and their role in modern society. The theme of this year's celebration is "Museums and networks. New Approaches, New Audience."

In addition, as every year, the Greek section of The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen a museum to be honoured in 2018. It is the Telecommunications Museum of OTE Group, located in Kifissia, whose purpose is to highlight its collections and work that are directly related to theme of this year's celebration. The Telecommunications Museum is an investment of the OTE Group for the preservation of cultural heritage and the history of telecommunications in Greece. Its collection include over 3,400 items and rich archival material with more than 25,000 telephotos, documents, telegrams, maps, as well as audiovisual material. It also uses advanced digital technologies to guide visitors and allow them to interact with the exhibits.
