Thasos: The "emerald" of the Thracian Sea

One of the most well-kept secrets of Greece, the island of Thassos is located just 6 nautical miles from Kavala and has managed (inexplicable how) to be still untouched by mass tourism.

It is not only the natural beauty that makes it so appealing, but also the scattered archaeological sites, which are offering a unique historical and cultural interest on vacation!

One of the most charming elements of the island is the trees (cedars, oaks, olive trees, pines), which are resting on the endless beaches. You will arrive in Thassos by boat, which departs from the ferry of Keramotis in Kavala.

The capital and main port of the island called Limenas. You can walk in sites of archaeological interest, visit the ancient theater and visit the Archaeological Museum for a more systematic approach to the antiquities of the island.

Beaches

Golden sandy beaches with shallow or deep waters, fragrant pines close to beaches with crystal bottom, beaches more or less organized for simple swimming or camping. The island covers all tastes and ensures superb choices not only for family holidays but also for private, quiet moments.

The island has picturesque beaches of Makriammos, Golden Beach, Aliki, Potos, Pefkari in Limenaria, Skala in Maries, Skala in Kallirachis, Skala in Sotiras, Skala in Prinos and Skala in Rachoni, which offer visitors amazing swimming and fresh fish in fishing villages on the island with a tranquil and idyllic atmosphere.

Archaeological Museum

A Kouros of 3.5 m, sculptures, statues, coins, plaster figurines and vases from various periods are some of the artifacts from the 7th BC until the 7th AD century, which are housed in the museum in Limenas, where you will get a glimpse of the life and customs of the inhabitants in antiquity.

Peninsula of Aliki

The natural salt marsh gave the name to this peninsula, which is located at the southern tip of the island and has been classified by the Ministry of Culture as archaeological site. Here are preserved the relics of ancient settlement, a sacred of 7th BC century and marble quarries and byzantine churches.

Castle

Located 12 km from Limenaria, Castle is the oldest settlement on the island, which have revived in recent years and came on the tourist map. Take the road from here to go to the famous waterfalls.

Ancient Agora

Excavations between 1948 and 1955 unearthed the ruins of the ancient Agora (religious, cultural and political center in ancient times) on the northeast side of Limenas, close to Archaeological Museum. Here you will see the ruins of the temples of Theagenes and Zeus and Artemisia.

Extra tips

The Old Path of Theologos

For hikers, there is an old beautiful path which is located outside the village Theologos. It starts from the church and ends at school. During the walk you can see the gorgeous view of the village but also of the mountains which surround it. A creek, a small bridge and lanterns, will travel you to another era.

Giola

A natural pool with turquoise waters that invite you to dive as soon as possible; you will surely lose your mind!

To reach Giola, drive from Potos to Astris. After the hotel Aeria will find a sign on your right which writes Sirines. Turn right on the gravel road. After a while you get to a beach. There you can park as the trail gets difficult. There are many arrows which will show you the way. We advise you to move with a high or four-wheel drive vehicle. The total distance from the main road is about two kilometers.
