Huge food scandal: MacDonalds and KFC had expired meat! (pics+video)

The Chinese police arrested yesterday five people from a unit of U.S. food group food in China that purchases food from OSI, in the center of a scandal that erupted with the sale of rotten meat in large international junk food chains, including MacDonald's and KFC, according to notice it issued.

The Public Security Bureau of Shanghai stated that among the 5 arrested is the head of the company's Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd-unit of U.S. group OSI Group LLC and the director of quality control of the company, but the police statement didn't share further details.

On Sunday, the authorities closed a OSI factory group, supplier of McDonald's and KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) in China, which it supported that had spoiled meat mixed with fresh and that it put new labels on expired products.

Among other clients of this factory are Pizza Hut, the group Yum, like chains Burger King, Papa John's Pizza, as the coffee chain Starbucks and chain 7-Eleven, according to separate statements of these companies.

Besides China, the scandal has hurt Japan, where McDonald's confirmed that 20% of marketing nuggets are from the factory of Shanghai.


Media reported that police questioned "many" employees. Pictures of meetings between government's officials, a man presented as responsible for quality control and another manager, were filmed after the closure of the factory and televised in Shanghai.

The official New China News Agency reported from its side that the researchers suspect that the subsidiary was seeking to conceal this fraud. Police and the authority responsible for the quality control of food and drugs in Shanghai discovered that the factory used expired meat to make chicken nuggets and patties of beef with spoiled and moldy meat to prepare another meat product, according to New China.

The OSI Group said on Monday that it's "shocked" by the scandal and announced an internal investigation. The factory of Shanghai, which opened in 1996, employs more than 500 workers. OSI provides Chinese McDonald's since 1992, according to the website of the group.

"We feel that we were cheated" said yesterday the general manager of McDonald's Don Thompson adding that his company is working with the Chinese authorities in this investigation.

The Chinese authority responsible for quality control of food and drugs in national leved mandated to conduct a research in all factories of OSI in the country. In this new scandal with food products, official Chinese media blame the international chains for "lack of honesty" and indifference to Chinese consumers.
