EU Commission President J.C. Juncker to visit Athens on Monday

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday will visit Athens, in his first official visit to an EU member-state in his new capacity, reports ANA-MPA.

In his message ahead of his visit, Juncker called Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and said he would present his Presidency's priorities on jobs, growth and investment. He also sent a message of hope and optimism by recognizing the efforts of the Greek people and the Greek government.

Juncker will meet Samaras on Monday, August 4, at 12.00 at Maximos Mansion. After the end of the meeting, the two officials will make joint statements to the press while the Greek premier will host a luncheon in honor of Juncker, which will also be attended by Greece's nominee for Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, currently the Defence Minister.

Juncker will present the new members of the College of Commissioners and their portfolios in early September, his spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud said on Friday.

She noted that Juncker cannot make a final decision on the portfolios of the new Commissioners before the special European Council meeting to take place in Brussels on August 30.

The spokeswoman also said that the majority of the EU member-states, except from two, have announced their European Commissioner nominees.

A new Commission team will include 28 Commissioners, one from each country.
