Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits Alexandroupolis

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Monday urged young people to have "self-respect," while addressing the faithful during a mass at the Saint Nikolaos Cathedral in Alexandroupolis, northeast Greece.

The Ecumenical Patriarch told young people to have "self-respect" regardless of what they choose to do in their life or what their occupation will be, underlining that this way they will gain recognition and respect from other people.

Earlier, the Ecumenical Patriarch was welcomed by Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupolis and afterward he was formally received in the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos, deputy ministers of interior and education, Giorgos Dolios and Alexandros Dermentzopoulos respectively, and local authorities.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew inaugurated the Holy Metropolis boarding house and visited the Monastery of Portaitissa near Soufli, accompanied by monks from the Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos.

In a dinner given in his honour on Sunday evening in Soufli, the Ecumenical Patriarch referred to the visit of Pope Francis to Istanbul on November 30 for the Saint Andreas feast. Speaking in the presence of metropolitans, monks and the mufti of Didimoticho, he added that 30 years ago the Ecumenical Patriarchate inaugurated the interfaith dialogue to ensure better cooperation in solving international problems concerning education, peace and environmental protection.

The Ecumenical Patriarch visited the Monastery of Panagia of Evros in Makri, near Alexandroupolis and later in the afternoon he will visit Komotini.
