Greeks spent over 700 mln euros in 7 years to repair or replace smartphones

Greeks spent over 700 million euros in the last seven years for repairs or replacements of damaged smartphones, according to a report by SquareTrade, a global extended warranty service provider in San Francisco.

Specifically, Greeks paid a total of 701,064,735 euros from 2007 to the present to repair or replace broken smartphones. It is notable that 40% of the owners had experienced a breakdown or appliance destruction during the last two years alone, while it took over 7 days for 30% of the owners to resolve a malfunction.

Of all accidentally damaged smartphones, 25% were caused by third parties.

Other findings by SquareTrade include the following:

- 57% of accidental damage occurs at home
- 15% of owners forgot their phone on the car roof
- Pet owners are 47% more likely to have a damaged smartphone
- 30% of the owners of damaged smartphones are under 45 years old
- Owners of iPhones are 23% more likely to damage their smartphone

According to Kevin Gillan, managing director for Europe, during the last seven years Greek smartphone users have spent on average 243 euros per capita for damaged phones, the second highest rate in Europe.

SquareTrade's research report is the only one of its kind to include Greek market data. Among other findings, it also shows that because of the high prices usually required to repair damaged smartphones, many owners resort to desparate measures - for example, it said, 8% of smartphone owners in Greece use a device with a broken screen.
