Arrears amendment gives thousands of citizens a 'breather', FinMin says

"The government responds to the need for a 'breather' to thousands of our fellow citizens who due to this difficult economic situation are not in a position to repay their debts," Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis on Friday said in the Parliament referring to the amendment on arrears settlement.

Hardouvelis said that new legislative initiatives would be undertaken in the near future such as the correction of distortions regarding foreclosures. He also announced specific actions for big debtors stressing that the government is committed to strengthening the compliance measures.

Regarding the amendment, Hardouvelis said it was "the result of intense preparation, thorough preparation and coordinated actions. This provision aims at helping those people who face difficulties in meeting their obligations due to liquidity problems."

"At the same time, the state actively supports the consistent taxpayers who meet their obligations under the previous debt settlement scheme," the Finance minister noted.
