The government started the social benefits, in an effort to change the climate that has developed against it.
However, the IMF report, which refers to the new harsh measures that should be taken, puts a damper on any "good intentions". The Deputy Minister of Labour, Vasilis Kegeroglou, announced that from September the institution of GMI will be implemented. This is a permanent mechanism to tackle poverty and ensure a guaranteed standard of living. According to "TA NEA", the program will begin in two municipalities and will target at people living in extreme poverty. The aim is to expand the program in 2015 from municipal to a nationwide level. The income limit for one to take the guaranteed income will be at 4,800 euros, while the minimum guaranteed income will be up to 400 euros.
Who will be the beneficiaries of the GMI?
1. Unemployed without other sources of income and home ownership will be entitled 200-230 euros a month, will have a chance for integrating the social tariff, will get heating allowance and will participate in the European Social Fund for training and employment.
2. Married retired couple with an annual income of up to 4,800 euros and homeowner will be entitled to 300 euros per month (230 euros for the man and 70 euros for the wife), will have a chance for integrating the social tariff, will get heating allowance and participate in the European Fund for poor and for feeding
3. Unemployed married couple with two children and an annual income of up to 4,800 euros without assets and uninsured will be entitled to 400 euros per month (230 euros for the man, 70 euros for the wife and 50 euros for each child). He will also get health care, be included in the social tariff, get heating allowance, participate in the European Social Fund for training and employment and participate in the European Fund for poor and for feeding.
