A sailing yacht was utterly destroyed and sank into the sea in the early hours of Friday morning after a fire broke out on board, while it was sailing south of the island of Zakynthos.
The eight passengers on board managed to safely reach the shore and are in good shape, though they were taken to Zakynthos General Hospital for further tests as a precaution.
Zakynthos coast guard patrol boats immediately sped to the scene, in addition to a private vessel with fire men and pumps that attempted to put out the blaze. A fire-fighting vessel from Patras arrived soon afterward and succeeded in putting out the fire on the sailing boat, which then sank.
The Zakynthos coast guard is investigating the cause of the fire.
