Kikilias praises the work of firefighters; a difficult fire season ahead

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, in an interview with SKAI TV, referred to the large number of fires that broke out every day while it is still spring, the daily battles of the firefighters and the very difficult firefighting season that is coming.

He also underlined the acceleration of AEGIS program which is being implemented.

"We will have a very difficult fire season. The day before yesterday we we had to battle with 70 fires. Along with the fire in Ierapetra, we had 121 fires within 12 hours. Our firefighters are heroes," Kikilias said and added: The climate crisis is beyond human powers even in strong economies, as was recently demonstrated with the catastrophic floods in Dubai.

Regarding the preparation that has been made for the upcoming fire fighting season, the minister spoke about the many kilometers of firefighting zones that are being opened for the first time after 50 years in forests, but also about the new doctrine of the Fire Brigade which focuses, among other, on the immediate intervention of aerial means.

Finally, Kikilias stressed the importance of citizens' awareness for the protection of forests, property and, above all, human life.
