Police arrest two Roma gypsy couples for suspected illegal adoptions/abductions

Police in Sparta, Peloponnese on Friday announced the arrests of two Roma couples after DNA testing showed that two four-year-olds, a boy and a girl, living with the familes were not their biological children, despite the two couples' claims to the contrary.

Acting on reports that the children may have been abducted due to a lack of physical resemblance with their purported parents, police investigated the two families, one of which lived in Trapezonti and another in the settlement of Kalyvia.

Police took both couples in for questioning and also asked for samples for DNA testing, which showed that the two children were not related to either the adults claiming to be their parents or to each other.

Both couples were arrested for abduction of a minor and are being held, while the children are to be taken into care at the 'Smile of the Child' charity once an order is given by a public prosecutor.

Police authorities have also asked for the prosecutor's permission to release photographs of the two children in an effort to trace their biological parents.
