Molotov cocktails and tear gas: Protesters and police clash in Athens before austerity vote

Protesters clashed with riot police in Athens amid anti-austerity protests, as protesters threw Molotov cocktails and other projectiles at the police who responded with teargas and pepper spray.

People took to the streets of Greece’s capital for the second consecutive day to protest new pension and tax-break cuts, which are expected to be voted on at around midnight Thursday.

An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people gathered in front of the parliament building in Athens' Syntagma Square, AP reports.

The situation escalated as a small group of masked demonstrators started to throw petrol bombs and other projectiles at the police. Police responded with tear gas and pepper spray.

One person was arrested and two were detained after clashes between protesters and riot police in an anti-austerity rally in central Athens on Thursday, where unions, bodies, anti-establishment groups and citizens gathered to protest against the new omnibus bill debated in parliament.

Hooded youths attempted to climb up the stairs in front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier on Syntagma square by throwing stones, petrol bombs and flares. Riot police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. One of the petrol bombs burned a cubicle of the Evzones guards located in front of the monument.

According to police sources who spoke to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the man arrested had an ax and a hammer in his possession. Clashes later continued in front of the Grande Bretagne hotel.
