Tzanakopoulos on reaction to Turkey, lawsuit filed by Samaras

Greece is trying to keep a cool head in response to the crises provoked by Turkey and to avoid further stoking tensions, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Friday, in an interview with Skai TV.

"We reacted with calmness, as a country that is at the centre of a more generally destabilized region must react. Our issue is not to intensify the crisis but to resolutely defend our sovereign rights," Tzanakopoulos said.

"Turkey is triggering controlled crises because it wants to send a message to its Western partners as it is facing a central political and national issue that is related to the Kurdish movements on its border. Its foreign policy is determined by the Kurdish issue," he said.

Criticising the lawsuit filed by former prime minister Antonis Samaras, he said that it is "an unprecedented action and an intervention in justice's work."

"The way he refers to prosecutors could be interpreted as an attempt to manipulate, terrorise, and even blackmail Greek justice," Tzanakopoulos noted.

The spokesman suggested that Samaras' attitude reflects his "anxiety, panic and fear".
